Ku’u Pua Sakura is Hōkū Zuttermeister’s second album release and features many songs that are near and dear to his heart. Growing up in a family filled with rich hula traditions, Hōkū wanted to share some of his favorite hula mele as well as other songs that he learned through the years from composers like Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, Al Makahinu “Pops” Barcarse and Chad Takatsugi. Shared with you are mele spanning the islands, from “Kaulana Ni’ihau” to the haunting mele of “‘Ōhelo Beauty”, with references to Hawai’i island and a few surprises along the way. Hōkū is also honored to share his first original composition and title song, “Ku’u Pua Sakura”, written for the love of his mother. We hope you enjoy our journey through these traditional and contemporary works of Hawaiian music.
