Kai Hyde ran Hooked Gallery in Kamuela, on Hawai’i Island for many years. Kai has been stringing Ni’ihau lei for more than 24 years and is a Ni’ihau shell lei expert, restorer, appraiser, maker, and teacher. He spends over 12 hours a day working with Ni’ihau shells for clients and museums around the globe. His passion for Ni’ihau shells started at a young age, when he first saw his Tutu’s collection. By the age of 13, he had made several lei of his own. He sees Ni’ihau shells as Hawaii’s gift from the sea. He is inspired by the beauty of the shells and the finished form they take. Many of the lei he has made take thousands of shells to finish, each of which has to be sorted, cleaned, and punctured in the same position by hand. All the lei he restores are done using traditional designs and techniques.
Come share Kai’s passion for this amazing art form at Kipuka by Na Mea Hawaii.
Kit prices range from $30 to $270 and higher depending on the jewelry piece you would like to create.
