November 21, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 1:00 pm on Thursday, repeating until December 31, 2020

Making moena (traditional Hawaiian mats) is a communal practice; together, we learn by doing.

Classes in our KEANAHALA program offer you the opportunity to acquire a new skill, share stories, and make connections through weaving and learning. The practice of working with lauhala is based on a deeper value system that respectsour natural resources, kūpuna, kumu, and community. This Hawaiian process of inclusion and collaboration will empower you in unanticipated ways.

Begin with a Moena Haliʻa, a small “memory mat,” approximately 6×6.” RSVP recommended, Drop-in welcome on Thursdays between 1–4pm. Allow yourself 45min to finish. $20 includes kit and instruction. RSVP to kipuka@nameahawaii.com.

KEANAHALA is a community weaving program of Pu‘uhonua Society, a non-profit organization that supports Native Hawaiian and Hawai‘i-based visual artists and cultural practitioners. For more info, visit puuhonua-society.org

KEANAHALA is sponsored by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA). OHA’s Community Grants Program supports non-profit organizations whose projects and programs serve the Native Hawaiian community and align with OHA’s Strategic Results.
