KEANAHALA – Hala Prep

January 29 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 4:00 pm on Monday and Wednesday, repeating indefinitely

Come prep lauhala with us!

Keanahala honors process – from ʻāina to moena – through the harvesting, preparing, and weaving of lau. During Hala Prep, learn the art of preparing lau hala for weaving, which begins with dethroning and de-ribbing the lau, cleaning the dirt and mud off the leaf, softening the lau, sorting the sizes of lau for particular projects, and finally rolling kūkaʻa for the leaves to rest.

Keanahala is a community weaving program, which perpetuates the Native Hawaiian practice of ulana lauhala (weaving) and helps to bring Hawaiian lauhala moena (mats) back into the home. Making moena (traditional Hawaiian mats) is a communal practice; together, we learn by doing.

The classes in the Keanahala program offer you the opportunity to acquire a new skill, share stories, and make connections through weaving and learning. The practice of working with lauhala is based on a deeper value system that respects our natural resources, kūpuna, kumu, and community. This Hawaiian process of inclusion and collaboration will empower you in unanticipated ways.

This two-year project (2019–2021), funded in part by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA), helps bring Hawaiian mats back into domestic spaces.
