ʻOhe Kapala stamping: Lei ʻāʻī w/Aulii Mitchell
March 9 @ 2:00 pm - March 10 @ 4:00 pm
Kumu hula Aulii Mitchell was trained by his mother, kumu hula Harriet Aana Cash Mitchell. He continues his families traditions in both of his hālau here in Hawai‘i nei and Auckland, New Zealand. Kumu Aulii’s current work is in the realms of weaving, kapa making, and wearable art.
Come and join him and create your own “Lei ‘ā‘ī” or “Scarf” using ‘ohe kāpala or bamboo stamps used in the art of kapa making using traditional dyes, such as ‘olena (turmeric), alaea (red earth), alaea (green earth), and kukui (black) keeping to traditional colors. Kumu Aulii’s present work of the hula ki‘i or Hawaiian puppetry is presently on display with the Asian Puppets at the East West Center at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
